Whether you’re firing up the grill for a summer cookout or whipping up dinner in the kitchen, there are three major food recalls issued just this month that you’ll want to take note of.

First, the US Department of Agriculture announced the recall of more than 372,000 pounds of hotdogs and corn corndogs made July 10-13 and distributed nationwide by Phoenix, AZ-based Bar-S Foods. At issue is the potential of foods being tainted with listeria, a bacteria that causes listeriosis, marked by severe aches, fever and stomach issues. At highest risk for illness are those with impaired immune systems and pregnant women. Listeriosis can prove fatal to unborn babies and newborns.

Russellville, AR-based ConAgra Foods also issued a recall of nearly 195,597 pounds of frozen chicken and beef entrée products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal shards. The issue initially was discovered July 1, when an employee spotted metal fragments while dispensing sugar from a supplier for sauce formulation during processing. The metal fragments range in size from 2 millimeters to 9 millimeters in diameter, and are curled, malleable and shiny. They may be embedded in the frozen sauces and can be tough to see.

Affected products were produced on various dates between May 31 and June 22, 2016 and bear establishment number “EST. 233” or “EST. P-115” inside the USDA mark of inspection.  They are:

  • 22-oz. plastic bagged meal packages of “P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Signature Spicy Chicken” with “Use By” date of 6/08/17 and case code 5006616500.
  • 22-oz. plastic bagged meal packages of “P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Mongolian Style Beef” with “Use By” date of 6/17/17 and case code 5006617400.

Finally, those with peanut allergies should be careful of 17 recalled products made by Battle Creek, MI-based Kellogg, including multiple Keebler and Famous Amos brands. The recall was issued after Kellogg flour supplier Grain Craft discovered some of its wheat flour had low levels of peanut residue. Those with mild peanut allergies may experience symptoms such as skin rash, hives, runny nose, itchy eyes, nausea and stomach cramping. Those with more severe allergies are at risk of serious symptoms including allergenic asthma or potentially fatal anaphylaxis.

A full list of affected Kellogg products can be found on the company’s website.

If any of these recalled products are in your kitchen and you’ve suffered no illnesses or injuries, dispose of the food and packaging immediately. If you or your loved ones have been injured or made ill, keep the product and packaging intact, get medical treatment and call 800-251-1111 to speak with a product liability attorney with Jacksonville’s Harrell and Harrell.
