Ford’s F-series trucks are among the best-selling pickups in the United States, with upward of 60,000 to 70,000 new units sold each month. No doubt, thousands of them are driven here on the First Coast. If you have one, take note.
Detroit-based Ford recently announced a voluntary safety recall of approximately 271,000 trucks registered to US owners, warning that a defect can cause the brake fluid to leak from the master cylinder into the brake booster. This can significantly boost the risk of an auto accident.
Affected by the recall are certain 2013-2014 Ford F-150 vehicles powered by 3.5-liter GTDI engines built at Dearborn Truck Plant, Aug. 1, 2013 through Aug. 22, 2014; and at Kansas City Assembly Plant, Aug. 1, 2013 through Aug. 31, 2014.
Thus far, Ford officials say they’re aware of nine accidents with no injuries, and one alleged injury involving interaction with the vehicle’s brakes but not associated with a collision. Though drivers and passengers have been fortunate to date, keep in mind that the defect does pose a high risk for injury and loss.
A VIN search on Ford’s website can quickly confirm whether the F-150 you drive is included in the recall. If so, and if you’ve yet had no trouble with the issue, your nearest Ford dealership will replace the brake cylinder and, if needed, the brake booster at no charge.
